Awesome Animal Reports

Wow! We did a wonderful job on our animal habitat reports. I am so impressed with all of the hard work everyone did.

Our class also created a rainforest habitat in our hallway. We each picked an animal to create. What a great job!

NO MORE SNOW!

It was  nice to get back to a actual full week of learning. I can't remember the last time we had that. We have been digging deep into Animal Habitats. So far we have studied the Arctic, Desert, Savanna, and we have just began to learn about the Temperate Deciduous Forest. We were excited to learn about our own habitat and see animals and plants that we are familiar with. I hope everyone is having fun planning and creating an animal habitat at home. Remember projects are due on March 21st. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.

In math we have been working hard on adding and subtracting numbers to 20. We have learned many strategies to help us solve our math problems. We have also worked on solving real world word problems. In social studies we learned all about the job of the president. Ms. Feuerstack read several books to us and then we voted who should be president. Ms. Feuerstack, Duck (from Duck for President), or Grace (from Grace for President). Then we held a class election and guess what Ms. Feuerstack won!

It's been a while

It has been a while since I have posted updates from our class, but during this time we have been quite busy.

At math we have been working with numbers up to 20. We have been using place value charts to name our tens and ones. We have been having so much fun practicing math at stations.

 

 

This month we learned about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ms. Feuerstack read some books to us and we even had a chance to listen to part of Dr. King's I have a Dream speech. We then drew Dr. King and thought of a dream that we have for the world.

Last week we began learning about penguins. We have read several non-fiction books and have begun to collect facts on an anchor chart (Thank you to Mrs. Carroll at The First Grade Parade for the great idea). Next week we will be writing a non-fiction piece about penguins.

This past week Circleville Elementary School celebrated kindness with a week of fun spirit day. We wore animal print, hats, silly socks, and school shirts. We also wrote about what it means to be kind. Here is what we came up with.

 

 

November Recap

We have had a lot of fun learning about the first Thanksgiving and turkeys this month. We read non-fiction books about Thanksgiving and created a chart about what we learned. Ms. Feuerstack was very impressed with all of the facts that we remembered from kindergarten. We also wrote a class acrostic poem about Thanksgiving and we wrote how-to catch a turkey stories. In our stories we worked on using transition words like first, next, last. This month we also made family turkey projects turned out so cute and so different.

No bones about it, we have a great class!

 

Thank you to all of the parents that were able to come and help us make our Q-tip skeletons last week. It was a fun afternoon and they came out so great. I love how they all look different.

 

 

 

We have been doing such a great job at Daily Five. We have all 5 choices up and running. Listening to reading and word work on the computer (www.lexiacore5.com) have become favorites.

 

Our writing is getting stronger everyday. We have been creating our own original stories and books at Daily Five. To help us fix up our writing we have been using CUPS. This stands for capitals, understanding (does it make sense), punctuation, and spelling. This is a great strategy to use at home when we do our reader's response.

 

 

We have gone batty!

We have been very busy during the last few weeks of school. We went batty in our classroom learning about the only flying mammal. Ms. Feuerstack read us many different non-fiction books about bats. We then collected facts on a recording sheet and wrote our own non-fiction writing piece. While looking at different non-fiction books we talked about the different parts of non-fiction books (photographs, captions, labels, glossary, index). We also graphed our feelings about bats. Most of our class thought that bats were cute. What do you think?
